I'm Gene Millen, your host on this website. Twenty-three years ago a skilled heart surgeon sawed open my chest and stitched in bypasses to six of my favorite arteries.
This got my attention and motivated me to discover what caused this near heart attack and how to help others avoid my mistakes.
New research points to inflammation of heart arteries as being one of the primary causes of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's disease.
John Hopkins researchers discover how nitric oxide prevents blood vessel inflammation
Until recently, doctors thought of heart disease as a "plumbing" problem. The theory was arteries, like pipes, became clogged by cholesterol deposits and slowed down blood flow to the heart.
But now we know that the damage actually starts when artery walls become inflammed by free radicals and other inflammatory chemicals in the body.
Over time, the body forms a plaque over the damaged area and as the inflammation of heart arteries continues the plaque grows larger and larger, eventually clogging the artery and triggering a heart attack.
The foods we choose can have a giant impact on the amount of inflammation in our bodies.
The chief trouble makers are refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup and other high glycemic carbs. The highest consumption of this sugar is in high fructose corn syrup which is in almost every thing that requires sweeteers.
White flour, potatoes, white rice and pasta, which are high in the glycemic index also raise our blood sugar and cause inflammation of heart arteries.
When the sugar from these foods hits your blood stream your body quickly perceives this danger and reacts by mounting an insulin counter attack.
If these conditions become chronic the result is insulin resistance, diabetes and worse.
Trans fats are lethal and should be avoided like the plague. If the food package label shows "partially hydrogenated" the product contains some trans fats and should be avoided.
In the ongoing Nurses' Health Study1each 2% increase in trans fat consumption converted to a whopping 93 percent increase in coronary heart disease!
Dr. Mary Enig is a world renowned biochemist and pioneer in researching healthy fats and oils was a lone whistle blower drawing attention to the dangers of trans fats. She single handedly bucked the giant manufactures that tried to silence her during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Enig is a graduate student of biochemistry at the University of Maryland when, in 1977, the US Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, chaired by Senator George McGovern, released its Dietary Goals for the United States.
Note: It took over twenty eight years for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to accept the overwhelming evidence of the dangers of trans fats.
This was primarily due to the long standing objections of the food processing industry. Yes politics and special interests have been alive and well in the food industry for decades...and still are!
High fructose corn syrup sounds harmless enough but a 12 ounce can of soda contains as much as 13 teaspoons of sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup!
All soft drinks in the U.S. and many so called "fruit" and "energy" drinks are loaded with high fructose corn syrup. Be sure to read your labels. It will take a minute, but it will be time well spent.
So what makes corn syrup such an unhealthy, fat-promoting product? Fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar. It also raises triglycerides which is a high risk for heart disease.
A simple blood test measures the amount of C-reactive protein (CRP) in our blood. If this number is high then your body has high levels of inflammation.
Your family practice physician should routinely check your C-reactive protein but if he doesn't mention it be sure to gently suggest that you would like to know your number. It should be below 1.0. See Risk Factors of Heart Attack.
A tried and true natural supplement for smothering the fires of inflammation that contribute to artery clogging, heart attacks and strokes is MSM.
There is much ongoing research on this nutrient but it has already gained considerable recognition for its results in relieving arthritis pain, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
A daily dosage of approximately 2 grams (2,000 milligrams) is recommended for health maintenance. Higher doses are typically necessary to experience therapeutic effects.
A person suffering multiple allergic symptoms during pollen season may require more than 8 grams per day.
The old "tried and true" natural remedies are often more effective than the man-made concoctions brewed up in the chemist's laboratories...and they don't have the side effects caused by most prescription drugs.
We recommend Vital Life Nutritionals MSM manufactured by Vitamer Labs, a pharmaceutically registered facility that has been a leader in the manufacturing of natural supplements for decades.
